Man Described as one of the ‘World’s Most Prolific Spammers,’ Arrested!

Robert Alan Soloway, described as one of the world’s most prolific spammers, was arrested Wednesday. Despite the arrest, millions of junk e-mails continued to surface the mailboxes. He was once on a top 10 list of spammers kept by The Spamhaus Project, an international anti-spam organization. Others have since topped him, mostly based in Russia and other countries out of reach of U.S. or European law.

Yahoo! Messenger Two ActiveX Controls Buffer Overflows

Security company eEye Digital Security, which found the bugs, gave them its highest security threat rating because they enable remote code execution.Yahoo is working on a patch for critical Yahoo Messenger vulnerabilities that could enable a remote hacker to take control of a user’s system. Researchers at eEye Digital Security found the bugs within the last few weeks and reported them to Yahoo on Wednesday, according to Marc Maiffret, co-founder and CTO of the security company. eEye’s researchers say there actually are multiple flaws in version 8 of Yahoo’s instant messenger client software.

Apple QuickTime Java Extension Two Vulnerabilities

Visiting a malicious website may lead to the disclosure of sensitive information. A design issue exists in QuickTime for Java, which may allow a web browser’s memory to be read by a Java applet. By enticing a user to visit a web page containing a maliciously crafted Java applet, an attacker can trigger the issue which may lead to the disclosure of sensitive information. This update addresses the issue by clearing memory before allowing it to be used by untrusted Java applets.

Professor Audun Josang suggests develop a new type of internet security system based on “reputation” where a community of users can rank the quality of a website. Ads by Google. Queensland University of Technology IT researcher Professor Audun Josang said a website’s ranking was determined by the number of people who visited the site – the more hits the higher the ranking.
But this system is fraught with danger and can be easily manipulated directing people to unreliable, low quality and fraudulent sites, according to Professor Josang.
