Websense completes SurfControl acquisition

Websense has completed the acquisition of UK-based web-filtering competitor SurfControl in a deal worth around ÂŁ204 million, according to the US company. The acquisition sees Websense double its customer base to more than 50,000 organisations worldwide.

Hacked website prompts shutdown of all California state sites

A hacked county website in California that redirected users to a pornographic site triggered the federal government to initiate a system-wide shutdown of all government sites in the Golden State. The process was never completed, after state officials urged the feds to reverse their decision to take offline all state websites bearing the “ca.gov” suffix. The US General Services Administration (GSA) is responsible for all “.gov” sites.

Online scam crackdown nets worldwide arrests

An international crackdown on internet financial scams this year has yielded more than $2.1bn (ÂŁ1bn) in seized fake cheques and 77 arrests in the Netherlands, Nigeria and Canada, US and other authorities said on Wednesday. The scammers use ploys such as “spam” email offering to pay recipients “processing fees” for depositing cheques, which later turn out to be fake, and sending the ostensible proceeds to the scammer, authorities said.

Brute force attack yields keys to Google’s kingdom

Miscreants pushing Viagra and malware are making new progress infiltrating Google indexes, a feat that’s considered the Holy Grail among spammers. Google, which by some estimates carries out 60 per cent of the world’s searches, goes to great lengths to filter naughty sites from its results. The proliferation of rogue sites that have made an end run around the controls is giving rise to conspiracy theories that Google has been hacked.

Apple warns iPhone hackers

Apple sent out a thinly veiled threat on Monday evening, warning iPhone owners that have hacked their devices to expect them to turn into fancy bricks. Earlier this month, a number of hacker groups unleashed their wares upon the iPhone fan base, selling, and in some cases giving away, tools to unlock the device from its designated carrier.

Hackers exploit crisis in Myanmar to spread infection

Email links to Dalai Lama’s genuine website, but attachment is malicious. Taking advantage of international concern regarding the daily demonstrations in Myanmar, IT security and control firm Sophos has cautioned computer users to be wary of a malicious email which claims to be a message of support for monks and other protesters in Myanmar from the Dalai Lama. In reality, however, it carries a malicious attack designed to infect the recipient’s PC.

ID card-based criminal record checks get thumbs up

Plans for a new service using the government’s controversial ID cards scheme to speed up criminal record checks have met with approval from volunteers involved in a trial of the technology. The volunteers piloted two potential online services developed by the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) and the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) which could be used to authenticate the identities of and information supplied by job applicants.

Hackers Target Back Door into Company Networks

Research commissioned by ZyXEL has found that 87% of IT managers are losing sleep at night over remote working because of the potential security risks to the network. Over the last few years, increasing numbers of businesses have been adopting remote and flexible working practices, largely due to the positive effect on workers’ morale, lifestyle and overall productivity. However, it is clear from the research that IT managers are very concerned about hackers using this avenue as a “back door” into the company network or to the risk of the corporate network by the use of unauthorised software and Internet access.

Mobile working is grave concern for IT managers

More than three quarters of IT managers are concerned about the security risks posed by remote working, new figures suggest. A study by networking company ZyXEL found that IT managers are worried about the possibility of hackers exploiting remote working practices to access the company network.
