French tech site hacks iTunes
A FRENCH TECH SITE is releasing free software that anonymises DRM free files bought on iTunes Plus. Ratatium.com has just launched software called Privatunes, which strips out personal information including the user’s full name and account e-mail. Apple wanted the information in the file so it could find out which of its users were pirating music. But Apple’s insistence had raised privacy concerns in Europe.
Ratatium.com says its software is aimed at guaranteeing the privacy of users and their rights as consumers to freely share and trade songs they have bought.
The software is only available for Windows and allows people to erase their name and e-mail addresses from their iTunes Plus files. It is slow as it can only anonymise one file at a time. But it allows you to make a backup of the original file.
Ratatium has promised an updated version of Privatunes which will be able to anonymise several files at a time and will be available on Mac and Linux.
